Summer is the best! It's been quite a long wonderful summer but it’s important to know the hair stressors this season brings, and how to prevent and treat them. Weather, chlorinated water, salt water, crazy wet hair ponytails, hats, heat tools all contribute to making hair more prone to sun-damage.
Sun rays act very much like bleach on hair--bleach reacts with the melanin in hair to remove the color, which strips the hair of its natural moisture. Excessive exposure to the sun ultimately destroys the surface layer of the hair, called the hair cuticle. UV rays break down the strands’ natural proteins, leaving hair dry, brittle and stressed.
This dryness leads to split ends and frizz, causing the hair to thin out and become limp, making it difficult to hold a style or a curl. This can lead to overstyling and even breakage. Hair is also particularly vulnerable to sun damage if it is fine or light-colored.
Whew...that was scary huh? Well don't fear, there are ways to nurse your hair back to health after a long summer of fun. Here are a couple of products that'll have your locks back to sleek and stunning before Spring has sprung.
Daily care seems the obvious first one. Some good, clean hydrating Smooth shampoo and conditioner to revitalize hair that's been in the sun is the first place to start.
And when it's time to really bring out the big guns we suggest a treatment masque to rejuvenate dull, damaged hair, keep it strong, healthy, hydrated and smelling amazing. You'll thank me. This stuff makes your hair feel like silk. After shampooing, while your hair is still damp just work the masque in from the tips to the scalp. Then let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse.
